In the world of film and advertisements, digitally re-aging characters has always been a laborious and expensive task. But now, Disney Research Studios has unveiled FRAN, an advanced AI system that streamlines the aging process in video creation.
Traditionally, artists had to manually alter the appearance of characters frame-by-frame. However, FRAN leverages deep neural networks to analyze an actor's headshot and predict the areas of the face that would be affected by aging. It then applies aging attributes like wrinkles or skin smoothing, seamlessly blending the AI-generated effect with the original face. The team is also exploring the potential for enhancing images in a 3D format for even more realistic results.
Previously, training AI on real datasets seemed impossible due to the need for pairs of images showing people at two different ages with matching expressions and backgrounds. But FRAN overcomes this challenge, making significant progress in automating the aging process.
While there are still some limitations, particularly in generating major image changes, these challenges provide opportunities for further improvements in future iterations. Digital artists can still fine-tune the effects for maximum realism, but FRAN handles the bulk of the aging effects, making the entire process more efficient and cost-effective. Mr. Cheyer has more than 15 years experience in a variety of roles, including executive, software engineer, research scientist, consultant, lecturer, and technical manager. A pioneer in the areas of distributed computing, intelligent agents, and advanced user interfaces, he is the author of fifty-nine peer-reviewed publications and more than twenty issued patents. Mr. Cheyer has also participated on a number of Program Committees and Advisory Boards.
As Senior Scientist and Co-Director of the Computer Human Interaction Center (CHIC) at SRI International, Mr. Cheyer led a multidisciplinary team of researchers exploring web services, distributed knowledge, and pervasive computing. Clash of Clans New Troop AI Explained! The CoC AI system was updated but is now changing back; what was the change? This video explains the attacking system and how troops behave when deployed. We break down how the updated system allowed troops to take into account 5 buildings instead of 3, however this allowed for troops to walk and attack buildings and defenses much further away. When setting a funnel this often left other troops exposed and was particularly prevalent with defense targeting troops. The system is changing back but it is still worthwhile understanding what the difference is and how it can affect your attack. I personally missed out with a 3 star attack strategy due to the change. The change did provide for some funny moments as you can see at the start of the video. Let me know your thoughts on the AI change which will revert back to its original with the 5v5 war maintenance break.

Machine behaviour is becoming cognitively very complex but rarely human-like. The efforts to fully understand machine learning and other AI systems are falling short, despite the progress of explainable AI (XAI) techniques. In many cases, especially when using post-hoc explanations, we get a false sense of understanding, and the initial sceptical (and prudent) stance towards an AI system turns into overconfidence, a dangerous delusion of trust.
In this AI for Good Discovery, Prof. Hernández-Orallo argues that for many AI systems of today and tomorrow we should not vainly try to understand what they do, but to explain and predict when and why they fail. We should model their user-aligned validity rather than their full behaviour. This is precisely what a robust, cognitively-inspired AI evaluation can do. Instead of maximising contingent dataset performance and extrapolating the volatile good metric equally to every instance, we can anticipate the validity of the AI system, specifically for each instance and user.
Prof. Hernández-Orallo illustrates how this can be done in practice, identifying relevant dimensions of the task at hand, deriving capabilities from the system’s characteristic grid and building well-calibrated assessor models at the instance level. His normative vision is that every deployed AI system in the future should only be allowed to operate if it comes with a capability profile or an assessor model, anticipating the user-aligned system validity before running each instance. Only by fine-tuning trust to each operating condition will we truly calibrate our expectations on AI.

As organizations adopt AI technologies they inherit operational risk. This risk often manifests itself in AI models that produce erroneous predictions that go undetected. In this talk we will discuss root causes for AI models going haywire, and present a rigorous framework for eliminating risk from AI. We will show how this methodology can be used as building blocks for continuous monitoring and firewall systems for AI.

Yaron Singer is the CEO and co-founder of Robust Intelligence, and the Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. Before Harvard he was a researcher at Google and obtained his PhD from UC Berkeley. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER award, the Sloan fellowship, Facebook faculty award, Google faculty award, 2012 Best Student Paper Award at the ACM conference on Web Search and Data Mining, the 2010 Facebook Graduate Fellowship, the 2009 Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship.

Since the release of ChatGPT, huge amounts of attention and funding have been directed toward chatbots. These A.I. systems are trained on copious amounts of human-generated data and designed to predict the next word in a given sentence. They are hilarious and eerie and at times dangerous.
But what if, instead of building A.I. systems that mimic humans, we built those systems to solve some of the most vexing problems facing humanity?
In 2020, Google DeepMind unveiled AlphaFold, an A.I. system that uses deep learning to solve one of the most important challenges in all of biology: the so-called protein-folding problem. The ability to predict the shape of proteins is essential for addressing numerous scientific challenges, from vaccine and drug development to curing genetic diseases. But in the 50-plus years since the protein-folding problem had been discovered, scientists had made frustratingly little progress.
Enter AlphaFold. By 2022, the system had identified 200 million protein shapes, nearly all the proteins known to humans. And DeepMind is also building similar systems to accelerate efforts at nuclear fusion and has spun off Isomorphic Labs, a company developing A.I. tools for drug discovery.
Demis Hassabis is the chief executive of Google DeepMind and the leading architect behind AlphaFold. So I asked him on the show to talk me through how AlphaFold actually works, the kinds of problems similar systems could solve and what an alternative pathway for A.I. development could look like.

To move AI from research/innovation to mainstream, there are, even today, significant barriers that exist to both build and deploy models to scale. To develop and deploy models, a data scientist/AI developer is doing all kinds of tasks that are tangential to data science but less actual data science. The chart you’re looking at reflects research we did at our own Mlcon machine learning conference and surveys of our own customers. All of these incidental tasks are necessary at some level, but they all add friction to the process, delay time to value, and contribute to lost opportunities.
So what are some of these incidental tasks? Installing and configuring hardware like GPUs, CPUs, accelerators, and storage, standing up cloud computing resources, configuring containers and container orchestration software like Kubernetes, figuring out how to manage hybrid cloud infrastructures. All of this reduces the ROI of AI from a business perspective. There are tools that help reduce these complexities, but few have extensive MLOps capabilities, and they often add complexity with heavy code requirements or require expertise in tools like Kubernetes or Docker to take advantage of containerization for model standardization, management, and repeatability.

Road defects in industrial estates can now be rectified faster, with inspections becoming quicker and less laborious. A new artificial intelligence system adopted by JTC Corporation reduces the time taken for the process to around an hour, compared to two days previously. Potholes, damaged grille covers and cracks in the tarmac are examples of defects the system's able to automatically detect. It's able to operate at night and during rainy conditions too. The system's developer said the accuracy of the inspection also surpasses that of traditional methods.

Abstract:
The healthcare industry is witnessing an era of innovation explosion, part of which is as a result of the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) within healthcare contexts. Although the technology is still relatively new, there are already some promising examples of AI systems improving diagnostics, treatment, and the speed of healthcare delivery. For example, some AI systems are remarkably predicting disease outbreaks, cancers, and heart diseases long before any signs or symptoms show. The use of AI is also advancing the practice of telemedicine, medical informatics, and is improving clinical operations (such as interpreting staining images and aiding the performance of high-risk surgeries). Many of these innovations are unprecedented.
However, one of biggest challenges in the use of AI for healthcare is the issue of bias: instances when the application of an AI algorithm compounds existing inequities in socioeconomic status, race, ethnic background, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or other criteria in ways that could amplify discrimination or adversely impact inequities in health systems. One of the many ways that this phenomenon of bias from AI health systems could occur is when an AI algorithm produces results that are systemically prejudiced due to erroneous assumptions in the machine learning process.
In this session, I plan to speak on bias in health AI systems. I hope to discuss how AI algorithms can become biased, how they enter systems, and the harmful effects of algorithmic bias in AI for health care. Taking a critical human rights approach, I will also explore the legal and regulatory responses to bias in AI for health purposes.

As Deep Learning (DL) is continuously adopted in many safety critical applications, its quality and reliability start to raise concerns. Similar to the traditional software development process, testing the DL software to uncover its defects at an early stage is an effective way to reduce risks after deployment. Although recent progress has been made in designing novel testing techniques for DL software, the distribution of generated test data is not taken into consideration. It is therefore hard to judge whether the identified errors are indeed meaningful errors to the DL application. Therefore, we propose a new OOD-guided testing technique which aims to generate new unseen test cases relevant to the underlying DL system task. Our results show that this technique is able to filter up to 55.44% of error test case on CIFAR-10 and is 10.05% more effective in enhancing robustness.

🤓🛣 An AI system gets its license - All about teleoperated driving
🛞 Everyone is talking about the future of autonomous driving, even though it doesn't fully work yet.
🚗 Even in already extensively autonomous car models, there are some "bugs" that haven't quite been fixed yet.
Some cars detect and show people on their display where there aren't any, or that the truck in front of you is heading straight for you. Other systems don't register oncoming things and vehicles at all and head straight for them instead of taking evasive action.
Something even the dumbest driver would do, as Steve Wozniak put it so nicely in his panel at DigitalX. 😂
📚 So, until cars can really drive independently, the AI involved first has to get through a few driving lessons before it passes its driving test. For the time being, it takes over driving only step by step.
In this case, the equivalent of driving school is the so-called "teleoperated driving": Here, vehicle sensors record the vehicle's surroundings and forward the collected information to the so-called "operator" via a mobile network.
The operator supports the car's journey from an external station and, in case of a problem, suggests solutions to the vehicle to help it learn from the scenario.
The car then continues to drive on its own - i.e. autonomously. Basically, like a driving instructor with his or her trainees.
So what will mobility look like in the future? Autonomous cars - okay. But what about air mobility? Shared mobility? Autonomous shared mobility? What are the challenges for the future?
💡 We talked about all these things with Marian Meier-Andrae, Chief Business Development Officer at MIRA GmbH, and with founder and COO of Kitty Hawk, Chris Anderson, at Digital X in Cologne and got some exciting insights.

The story of humans began a long time ago.
Three and a half billion years ago protein molecules floated around the ooze called the primordial soup. Then something happened and a molecule made a copy of itself.
And then another copy and another. Soon these molecules arranged themselves into something called a cell.
Then cells clumped together and multiplied. Organisms were created. Over the next three billion years, the organisms became more complicated and more diverse.
375 million years ago one of those organisms crawled out of the sea.
4 million years ago hominids emerged. Hominids had large brains and advanced cognitive abilities. They could reason, communicate and cooperate.
200,000 years ago, homo sapiens, modern humans appeared. They developed agriculture, organized into civilizations and became masters of the planet.
The story of humans began a long time ago. But all stories end.
And according to many leaders in business, science and technology: we're in the final chapter. The part of our story where we finally go extinct.
And there's nothing we can do to stop it.
