Violence and Rioting in Sri Lanka Prison

Army soldiers and police commandos used tear gas and live ammunition to contain the violence.<br /><br />At least 31 prison guards and inmates were injured when rioting broke out on Tuesday at a Sri Lankan prison. <br /><br />Media reports say rioting broke out on Tuesday morning when prison guards were conducting a raid inside the Colombo Welikada prison.<br /><br />Welikada holds hundreds of suspected Tamil Tiger rebels.<br /><br />Prisoners then set fire to the kitchen and a building housing records and documents of the inmates. <br /><br />Army soldiers and police commandos used tear gas and fired live ammunition to contain the violence.<br /><br />Twenty-six inmates and 5 prison guards were injured but doctors have said none of the injuries were life-threatening.<br /><br />Television pictures showed smoke billowing out from one of the buildings. <br /><br />Other clips showed prisoners taking refuge on the rooftop. <br /><br />The Welikada is a maximum security prison and is the country's largest.
