West Indies on the other hand bowled tidy lines but did not have any luck. There was not much in the wicket for the pacers but Rahkeem Cornwall bowled a testing spell and caused some trouble for the batters while Warrican was economical. Windies are yet to draw the first blood and it seems like there is a long day on the field in store for them. They will have to come up with better plans and hope to get a few wickets to come back into this game. Can they do it or will India continue on their merry way?
Change in angle for Holder. Around the wicket good length but too wide outside off. Jaiswal is balanced on the backfoot and finds the room to his avail. Cuts this nicely through the vacant third man region for the second boundary of the over. Finds the middle of the bat. This is now the highest opening partnership for India in West Indies. The previous best was 159 between Wasim Jaffer and Virender Sehwag in 2006.
Around the wicket. Length and outside the off stump. Jaiswal gets on the front foot and drives. Plays it on the front foot off the bottom of the bat and finds the gap through the backward point region for four. Poor delivery and gets the treatment it deserved. A juicy low full toss from Warrican outside off and Rohit drives it beautifully in the gap between covers and extra covers for a boundary.
So far in this innings Rakheem Cornwall has induced 22.2% of false shots the most by a West Indian bowler. Joseph with 16.6% is the next. All the way! Pitched-up full around off. Sharma picks it nicely and lifts it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie. In Tests since 2022 this is the first 100-run opening partnership for India. Prior to this in 21 innings their opening pair had put on four 50+ stands with 76 against Australia in Nagpur being the highest.
Losing the toss did not affect India one bit. They were asked to bowl and all of their bowlers were pretty disciplined. It was looking like a wicket where seamers would get some help up front and Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat did get it but with no luck. Rohit Sharma soon realized this is a slow wicket and introduced Ravichandran Ashwin early which proved to be the best decision. He straightaway got them the breakthrough that they wanted and never looked back.
Ashwin also became the first Indian to get the wicket of a father-son duo when he got rid of Tagenarine Chanderpaul who is as you all know the son of West Indian legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul. It was once again the duo of Ashwin and Jaddu that ran through the Windies' batting line-up. India picked up four wickets in each of the first two sessions and then did not take much time in the final session to bowl the hosts out. Ashwin ended up with his 33rd five-wicket haul in Tests while Jadeja got three.
West Indies on the other hand had a forgettable Day 1 as they weren't able to match the levels of the visitors. They elected to bat but it was a dismal performance from them as they were bowled out for a mere 150. Only Alick Athanaze looked solid for his well-made 47 and that too on his debut which says a lot about this Windies team. More than good balls their batters gave their wickets away with poor shot selections that cost them a lot.
Their bowling was a lot better with Alzarri Joseph and Rahkeem Cornwall coming close on a few occasions but they didn't manage to get any wickets which has put them on the back foot in this Test. However surprisingly there was a lot of turn on offer and the hosts will look to capitalize on that. They will hope that they come up with more energy and determination on Day 2.
