New rules are set to take effect on June 28th, which will allow residents of Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen to make solo visits to Taiwan.

'Til now, only tour groups, generally with pre-planned schedules, could make such trips.

The prohibition on solo-travel has stood for decades--though individual travel in the other direction has been much less difficult. Along with the new system, passenger flights between the two neighbors will be increased to about 560 per week.

Taiwan only lifted the ban on visitors from the Mainland in 2008--and since then roughly 2.3 million have come. The new rules seem likely to add to the influx.
